What it means
A query universe is the full pool of search queries your target audience uses to find you around a topic. Kevin builds this as a Keyword Universe: A large, living list that surfaces the most important queries and phrases at the top and lives in a spreadsheet or database like BigQuery.
Instead of running a keyword sprint every quarter, you build the universe once and work through it across your site over time. Mapping it is the first step to measuring and optimizing topical authority.
Why it matters
Anyone can build a large list of keywords, but creating strong filters and sorting is the hard part. Keyword and intent research is often static, done monthly and quickly outdated, so a query universe turns it into a continuous prioritization system.
The value is the sorting, not the list: Search volume alone is weak because high-volume keywords often convert worse, or return no traffic once AI Overviews (AIOs) answer them.
Say a mid-market B2B SaaS company maps a query universe of 12,000 queries for its category. By sorting on conversion potential instead of volume, it finds 300 mid-volume queries no competitor covers well, prioritizes them, and lifts qualified organic signups 25% while ignoring head terms buried under AIOs.
How to use this knowledge
Mine seed keywords through rank trackers, then expand and store everything in one database instead of scattered spreadsheets. Sort and filter on more than volume: Intent, conversion potential, and difficulty. Map your coverage against competitors to find the entities and questions you are missing, which is how you build topical authority. Keep the universe live and revisit it, rather than repeating a one-off research sprint.
