What it means

Turn 1 is the first prompt and the model's first answer in an AI conversation, before any follow-up. A conversation can run many turns as a user refines, compares, and narrows, but Turn 1 is where the model sets the initial frame. It is the moment that decides which brands are in the room at all. Because many users stop after the first answer, Turn 1 carries outsized weight for visibility.

Why it matters

Tracking only single prompts misses how people actually use AI, but Turn 1 is still where the largest share of attention lands. In one AI Mode study, 64% of participants clicked nothing at all and many adopted the model's first shortlist with no external check. If your brand is absent at Turn 1, you are not in the consideration set when the user makes their call. Later turns add depth, but they reach a shrinking audience.

A shopper prompts "best washer dryer set under $2,000." The model names 4 brands at Turn 1. Most users take that list as-is; only a fraction ask a follow-up about stacking or capacity. A brand missing from that first answer never gets considered, no matter how strong its spec page is.

How to use this knowledge

  1. Track Turn 1 for breadth. Run your seed prompts at the first turn to measure how often you appear when attention is highest.

  2. Then score full journeys for depth. Build key prompts into multi-turn conversations and score every turn to see whether your presence persists.

  3. Win the category prompt. Query your category the way a buyer would and document which brands appear at Turn 1, in what order, and with what framing.

  4. Earn the first-answer mention. Strengthen the authority and attributes that get you named in the opening answer, not just in a deep follow-up.

Growth Memo guidance

Track all 40 seed prompts at Turn 1 for breadth, and build the 16 problem prompts into full 5-stage journeys for depth.

Run the full sequence as 1 conversation rather than 5 isolated prompts, and score every turn. The payoff is persistence: a brand cited at the Problem stage carried all the way to Selection in 4 journeys under high reasoning and in zero under minimal. Persistence is the metric a one-shot tracker can never see.

64% of AI Mode participants clicked nothing at all during their task. They read the AI's text, sometimes scrolled through inline product snippets, and declared their finalists.

  • Query fan-out — How the model expands a single Turn 1 prompt into many background searches.

  • First-click behavior — What users do after Turn 1 on the rare occasions they click out at all.

  • Multi-turn conversation — The full sequence of prompts after Turn 1, where presence either persists or drops.

  • Presence rate — How often your brand is mentioned in the answer, measurable starting at Turn 1.

  • Prompt tracking — The practice of monitoring brand visibility across prompts and turns.
